Authoritie in Chanika, a town council located in Kisoro district are actively searching for a couple accused of fatally caning a 15-year-old boy who was caught using their pit latrine.
The incident, which occurred on May 4, 2024, has led to the tragic death of Gilbert Niyiduha, a resident of Kanyamicucu village in Kirimbiro. The suspects, Amos Niyonzima and his wife Mickline Nyirangorore, are facing allegations of murder by assault.
Reports suggest that the deceased entered Niyonzima’s residence around noon to relieve himself in their pit latrine. However, he was discovered by Nyirangorore, who promptly alerted her husband. Subsequently, Niyonzima rallied a group of young men to detain the boy, after which he was subjected to a severe beating, reportedly receiving 10 strokes.
Despite pleading for forgiveness, the boy’s appeals were in vain. Following the punishment, he displayed signs of severe distress, prompting concerned residents to transport him to Claresenga Health Centre III for medical attention. Sadly, the boy was pronounced dead upon arrival, despite efforts to save him.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed that local authorities promptly notified the police, who visited the scene of the incident to gather evidence and statements from witnesses.
The boy’s body was later transferred to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continue.
Efforts to locate and apprehend the suspects, identified as Amos Niyonzima and Mickline Nyirangorore, are currently underway. The case has been officially recorded as Chanika CRB 005/2024, as law enforcement agencies strive to bring justice to the tragic loss of the young boy’s life.
