The government spokesperson and Director of the Uganda Media Center, Mr. Ofwono Opondo, has urged journalists in the Lango sub-region to help the government by holding its leaders accountable.
Addressing journalists at the Lira City Board Room in Lira City on Tuesday afternoon, Ofwono told journalists that the main purpose of the engagement meeting was to receive feedback and raise journalists’ awareness on government policies and programs, especially those of national significance. It’s only through the work of journalists that the issue of corruption can be fought.
Citing Lira City, RCC Egole Lawrence appreciated the journalists in Lira for working hand in hand with his office to disseminate information correctly always.
Ofwono’s appeal was welcomed by Mr. Edfy Olwa of UBC TV, the editor of Unity FM Bismarck Olang, Julius Ocen of NTV, Felix Omara of Voice of the Gospel FM, among others who actively participated in the engagement meeting.
According to Joseph Ekol Ekol of New Vision publication, he tasked Ofwono Opondo that the government is not considering journalists who always mobilize for the NRM party, especially when it comes to appointment positions and deployment of active cadres.
Ekol mentioned a case in point as that of the recent appointment of assistant RCCs and assistant Deputy RDCs where few real media mobilizers were left out.
Mr. Ocamoyitdyel, an online journalist, reminded Ofwono Opondo that ONC office has not deployed many media penalists including him who was number 71 in the official ONC NRM media panelist in the year 2021.
He added that many of their colleagues have been deployed and the government has not up to date considered many of them yet they equally mobilized for the party under Milly Babalanda Babirye who was by then PA to H.E under ONC Kyambogo office.
“As journalists in Lango sub-region, you must know what is in the budget for Lango sub-region at the national level, adding that beneficiaries of the project in each district through the office of the CAO, RCC/RDC, LCV of each district should be made public through the media exposing them,” he (Ofwono Opondo) emphasized the importance of positive reporting by journalists.
