Mbarara Authorities Issue Eviction Notice to Katete Traders

The authorities of Mbarara City South Division have issued a directive requiring traders at Katete Trading Center to vacate their roadside stalls by July 1, 2024. This decision arises from concerns over several critical issues including the absence of adequate sanitation facilities, escalating traffic congestion, and safety risks posed by the current market setup.

The directive underscores the city division’s commitment to addressing longstanding challenges that have impacted both traders and the local community. The lack of accessible toilets has been a significant concern, posing health risks and sanitation challenges for both traders and customers frequenting the area.

Traffic congestion has also been a growing issue at Katete Trading Center, exacerbated by the positioning of stalls along the roadside. This congestion not only disrupts the flow of vehicles but also compromises pedestrian safety, especially during peak market hours.

Furthermore, the current arrangement of stalls poses safety hazards, potentially affecting both traders and passersby. Concerns have been raised about fire safety measures and emergency access in case of incidents, prompting the need for a reevaluation of the market layout and infrastructure.

In light of these challenges, the July 1 deadline serves as a critical timeline for traders to relocate from the roadside stalls. The authorities say they aim to create a safer and more organized trading environment that aligns with urban planning standards and promotes public health and safety.

They also added that efforts are underway to assist affected traders in transitioning to alternative trading spaces that meet regulatory requirements and provide necessary amenities. This includes consultations with market stakeholders to ensure a smooth relocation process and minimal disruption to business operations.

According to an official, the decision to evacuate traders from Katete Trading Center reflects a broader strategy by Mbarara City South Division to enhance urban infrastructure and improve living conditions for residents.
