The police in Luuka district are currently investigating a tragic accident that claimed the lives of a 34-year-old former woman Member of Parliament aspirant and the Vice Chairman of LC II Kirimwa Parish. The fatal incident occurred when their silver grey Isuzu double cabin vehicle, registered as UG4654C, collided head-on with a sugarcane-loaded lorry bearing registration number UAU 073G.

The deceased have been identified as Gladys Aliyinza, a resident of Lambala village in Irongo parish, Irongo sub-county, Luuka District, and Yusufu Biita from Kirimwa in Bukooma Sub-county, Luuka District. The tragic collision unfolded along the Kamuli-Kaliro road, specifically at Nawansega cell, Nawansega Ward, Bukova Town council in Luuka District.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest that the accident occurred early on Thursday, June 27, 2024, around 04:30 AM. The sugarcane-loaded truck, heading from the Kaliro direction, was descending a slope when it collided with the Isuzu double cabin climbing in the opposite direction. The impact occurred at a slight bend on the road, potentially contributing to the severity of the crash. Initial assessments indicate that excessive speed may have been a significant factor leading to the collision.

Tragically, Yusufu Biita lost his life instantly at the scene of the accident. Efforts to save Gladys Aliyinza, who sustained critical injuries, were unsuccessful, and she passed away while being transported to Musana Hospital in Kaliro District.

Upon receiving the distressing news, traffic police promptly responded to the scene, accompanied by the District Police Commander. The body of Yusufu Biita was taken to Kiyunga Health Centre IV for postmortem examination, while Gladys Aliyinza’s remains were conveyed to Musana Community Hospital.

The drivers of both vehicles involved in the collision fled the scene following the incident. Law enforcement authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend them, and further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the accident are currently underway.
