David Lewis Rubongoya, Secretary of the National Unity Platform (NUP), reported that on the evening of July 22, 2024, several NUP members who were violently arrested from the party’s headquarters were brought before the LDC Magistrate’s Court. These individuals have been remanded to Luzira Prison. Attempts to secure bail were unsuccessful, as the state requested additional time to prepare their response.

Among those charged is Hon. Zaake Francis, who faces a traffic offense. The other members, including Hon. Kirumira Hassan, Hon. Tebandeke Charles, Mubiru James, Mukasa Ben Ntale, Kemigisha Sharon, Mungu Brian, Ssemanda Ibra, and Nabakooza Shamim, are charged with unlawful assembly.

Rubongoya criticized the use of the criminal justice system as a tool for persecuting political opponents, expressing confidence that they will ultimately overcome these challenges.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) reported that several of their comrades and leaders have been detained at undisclosed locations following their arrest this morning at the party headquarters in Makerere, Kavule. The arrests were described as illegal by the party.

In response to questions about his participation in tomorrow’s protest march to Parliament, which addresses rising corruption in the country, NUP leader Bobi Wine stated, “I support the young people 100% and am glad to see them leading from the front. Don’t be surprised if you see me there with you. I didn’t organize this protest, but both I and the party support it.”

Earlier in the day, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has accused authorities of transforming their headquarters into a military barracks, following the violent arrest of several of their leaders. The party claims that roads leading to their office have been blocked, alleging that these actions are driven by fear of public opposition.

NUP asserted that the government’s heavy-handed response reflects an attempt to suppress dissent. The party says it remains resolute, arguing that overcoming fear will diminish the government’s control over the people.
