(Rukungiri) – Uganda, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two teenagers in separate incidents in Rukungiri District in Western Uganda. The first case involves 16 year old Erias Ahereza, a resident of Nyakagyera Cell, Burora Parish, Nyarushanje Subcounty. According to a police statement, Erias was allegedly assaulted by his stepmother, Ninsiima Regisi, who then locked him in a room for a week. The exact date of the incident has not been specified.
On Monday, a neighbor alerted Aston Mutabazi, the Local Council 1 (LC1) Chairperson of Nyakagyera Cell, about the situation. Mutabazi intervened and took the boy to Kebisoni Health Centre. However, due to the severity of his condition, he was referred to Kisiizi Hospital. Unfortunately, Erias was pronounced dead on Tuesday at around 5:00 PM.
The police, led by Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, were informed of the situation. Officers from Kiyenje Police responded by registering a case of murder. The crime scene was examined and documented, the suspect was arrested, and Erias’ body was taken to Rwakabengo HC III mortuary for a postmortem.
In a separate but equally tragic incident, another teenager, 17 year old Ayesiga Dismus, lost his life in a road accident along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo Road. The accident occurred on Wednesday morning, at around 9:30 AM, in Buyanja Town. Dismus was riding a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFJ 623W, from Rukungiri towards Ntungamo at a high speed. He was following a black Harrier when he attempted to overtake it without adhering to traffic rules.
As Dismus tried to brake after noticing an oncoming Isuzu Forward truck, registration number UAU 865J, driven by Byamukama Shaban, he lost control and drifted out of his lane. The result was a head-on collision that killed him instantly.
Elly Maate stated that the police visited, examined, and documented the accident scene. They also recorded relevant statements and conducted a postmortem. The cause of the accident has been attributed to reckless riding. The vehicles involved are currently parked at Buyanja Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
