Amsterdam, Netherlands – During the Uganda-Netherlands Business Convention, as captured in a video recording, Uganda’s Minister for Trade and Industry, Balam Ateenyi Balugahala, had a candid conversation with Dr. Nico Scoonderword, the National Unity Platform (NUP) ambassador in Europe. The event, held in Amsterdam, brought together key figures from Uganda and around the world to discuss bilateral business opportunities and foster economic collaboration.
Despite their stark political differences, the meeting between Minister Balam, a staunch supporter of the NRM, and Dr. Nico, a prominent figure in the opposition party led by Robert Kyagulanyi, was marked by a gesture of goodwill and mutual respect.
During their encounter, Dr. Nico issued a rather unusual but earnest warning to Minister Balam. He advised the minister to be cautious about consuming food and drinks in Europe, citing concerns about potential poisoning. Dr. Nico, well-known for his outspoken views on Uganda’s political landscape, emphasized the risks associated with political differences, even when abroad.
The exchange took a lighter turn when Minister Balam, initially surprised by the warning, asked Dr. Nico if he could taste his drink as a sign of trust. In a symbolic gesture, Dr. Nico offered the minister a beer. However, Minister Balam, perhaps wanting to maintain a more formal demeanor, declined the beer and requested a whisky instead. Dr. Nico obliged, and Minister Balam tasted the whisky, which he seemingly enjoyed.
This small but meaningful act was seen as a moment of humanity and connection, transcending political divisions. It also served as a challenge to Minister Balam to consider adopting a similar approach of tolerance and understanding in his interactions back home, where he has been vocally critical of the opposition, particularly Kyagulanyi.
The Uganda-Netherlands Business Convention, a key event for fostering economic ties between the two nations, was the backdrop for this rare moment of political civility. The convention saw participation from various Ugandan and Dutch businesses, aiming to explore and expand trade opportunities between the two countries.
As the event concluded, observers noted that while the political divide between the Ugandan government and the NUP remains significant, moments like these suggest the possibility of mutual respect and understanding, even among political adversaries.
