The health department in Kikuube district has reported a suspected case of monkeypox. The patient, a young male from Kihohoro village, is currently isolated at Kikuube Health IV.
According to Godfrey Barongo, the district health educator, the patient presented with symptoms similar to those of monkeypox. Samples have been sent to the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe for testing.
Barongo urged the public to be vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience any monkeypox-like symptoms. He emphasized the importance of avoiding self-medication and seeking professional care.
Peter Banura, the district chairman, expressed concern about the community’s lax approach to hygiene. He called on the health department to intensify efforts to promote handwashing and other preventive measures.
Uganda has recorded 10 cases of monkeypox since July 2024, with the highest number of cases in Kasese, Mayuge, Kampala, Wakiso, and Amuru.
On August 14, the World Health Organization declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern.
To prevent the spread of monkeypox, individuals should avoid physical contact, wash their hands regularly with soap, and avoid sharing clothing.
