Residents in Kisoro have criticized Uganda’s 62nd Independence Day commemoration, calling on the government to prioritize service delivery instead of wasting money and resources on extravagant celebrations.

This criticism comes as Uganda celebrates its independence in Busia District at Busikho PTC grounds in Masafu Town Council, under the theme “A Recommitment to Secure and Fortify Our Destiny.” This event marks the first time Busia has hosted a national celebration of this scale.

Edward Ngabo, a resident of Kisoro Municipality, claimed that while Uganda is theoretically independent, in practice it is not, as voters are intimidated and threatened during election campaigns, undermining the democratic system of governance.

Duncan Musiimenta, a resident of Kagezi Parish in Kanaba Subcounty, Kisoro District, revealed that corruption, tribalism, and bribery have favored a minority while negatively affecting the majority of the people in Kisoro and Uganda as a whole.

Meanwhile, National Unity Platform Chairperson Laban Sibomana stated that Uganda is effectively a puppet state, with citizens being abducted, kidnapped, and detained without trial, forcing them to live in fear and misery.

Sibomana further emphasized that it is top government officials who enjoy true independence, not the citizens. He called on the government to redirect funding and resources meant for independence celebrations toward development sectors such as agriculture, transport, health, and education.
