UPDF Soldiers Advised to Save for Retirement

(Kakiri) – Major General Francis Takirwa, the Deputy Commander of the Land Force, has emphasized the need for officers and personnel of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) to practice financial discipline and save for retirement. He warned against reckless spending and highlighted the importance of planning for the future.

Maj Gen Takirwa made these remarks during the handover ceremony for the Commander of the 1 Infantry Division at the Division headquarters in Kakiri, Wakiso District. During the ceremony, Brigadier General Joseph Ssemwanga officially handed over command to Brigadier General Steven Mugerwa.




In his address, Maj Gen Takirwa advised the incoming Division commander, Brig Gen Mugerwa, to lead by example in order to achieve the best outcomes for his team. He also wished Brig Gen Ssemwanga success in his new assignment in Somalia. Maj Gen Takirwa stressed the importance of civilian safety, stating, “Our strategic weapon is cooperation with civilians.”




Brigadier General Steven Mugerwa, who previously served as the Deputy Division Commander for the 2 Infantry Division, reassured the soldiers of his understanding of the UPDF and the local terrain. He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he received and pledged to work closely with everyone in the division to ensure smooth operations.




The outgoing Division Commander, Brigadier Joseph Ssemwanga, underscored the necessity of teamwork. He encouraged both the new commander and the existing staff to support each other for a seamless transition of leadership.

The handover ceremony was attended by senior and junior officers of the UPDF, representatives from the Uganda Police Force, and notable members of the civilian community, including Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), headteachers, and the village chairman.
