Netizens decided to roast musician Pius Mayanja, also known as Pallaso, after he made a bold claim that he introduced TikTok in Uganda.
During an awards ceremony to celebrate local content creators on the video-sharing platform, the singer bragged that he was responsible for the popularization of the app in Uganda.
Pallaso revealed that he was contacted by a lady from Kenya named Gladys, who informed him that they were planning to extend TikTok to Uganda. That is when he opened his account, and in doing so, he became the first Ugandan to be verified on the platform owned by Zhang Yiming.
“Actually, people don’t know, but I’m the one who introduced TikTok in Uganda. A lady called Gladys from Kenya contacted me and told me they wanted to extend TikTok to Uganda.
I opened up the first TikTok account in Uganda, and I was even the first person in Uganda to be verified on TikTok. These were the days before COVID,” he revealed.
However, netizens weren’t having any of this talk and immediately began roasting him. Some informed him that they had been using the platform as far back as 2017.
“Days before COVID? I had TikTok in early 2018, and my friends started before me,” said one social media user.
“He’s looking for his way back, but even the jailed Alien Skin is better than him,” another user accused the Malamu singer of seeking relevance.
It should be noted that TikTok was officially launched in 2016 and started spreading globally over time. In Uganda, the platform became viral during the COVID-19 lockdown.
However, it had been present before this time, making it unclear how Pallaso, the self-styled “King of the East,” could have introduced it to Uganda.
