Alebtong, Uganda – SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the police PRO of the North Kyoga Region, issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the investigation into the suspected mob murder of Ongom Denis, a 25-year-old resident of Allela Village, Omee Parish, Amugu Sub-County, Alebtong District.

The incident occurred around 5:00 AM on December 4, 2024, at Awelo Cell, Okum Ward, Amugu Town Council, Alebtong District.

According to SP Okema, it is alleged that Ongom was intercepted early in the morning at Awelo Cell on suspicion of carrying two stolen chickens hidden in a sack. While locals were questioning him, another group began assaulting him, and he allegedly succumbed to the injuries inflicted during the attack. Okema said that the police were notified, and a case file was opened at Alebtong Central Police Station.

Officers, led by the District Police Commander, visited the scene with the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), conducted examinations, and documented the incident. Witness statements were recorded, and sticks and other items believed to have been used in the assault were recovered and preserved as evidence by the police.

Okema further stated that the deceased’s body has been transported to Alebtong Health Center III, pending a postmortem examination. The alleged stolen chickens were also recovered, though their owner has yet to be identified.

One suspect, Ojuny Jimmy, a 34-year-old teacher at Otoirio Nursery and Primary School, has been arrested since the incident reportedly occurred at his residence. He is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

Mob actions are on the rise in the region, and the police strongly appeal to the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. Such acts of mob justice are illegal and will not be tolerated.
