Police in Kakumiro District, western Uganda, have recovered three cows suspected to have been stolen, following a tip-off from a vigilant resident.
The operation also led to the impounding of a Toyota Super Custom vehicle, registration number UBD 356B, which was being used to transport the animals.
According to Albertine Region Police spokesperson Julius Allan Hakiza, the vehicle was intercepted along the Hoima road, between Kakindu and Kihuna.
“Upon being stopped, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, leaving behind the cows. Unfortunately, one of the animals was found dead,” Hakiza explained.
A document found in the vehicle indicated that the cows may have been transported from Kasangati in Wakiso District. However, initial investigations suggest that the animals were stolen from Butema Sub-county in Hoima District.
Hakiza urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help combat the rising cases of cattle theft in the region.
“We are collaborating with the local community to identify the rightful owner of the animals,” he added.
