Lira, Uganda – The Pakistani Association in the Lango sub-region has donated food and essential supplies worth Shs1.5 million to Ngeta Babies Home in Lira.

According to Association President, Muhammad Nawaz Ateeq, the donation aims to support the immediate needs of the children residing at the home.

“We shall continue supporting them, particularly in addressing the water challenge,” Ateeq said during the handover of the items to Sr. Frances, the head of Ngeta Babies Home.

The package includes food items such as posho, rice, sugar, biscuits, and other essential necessities for the children.

Sr. Frances revealed that nine children currently reside at the home out of 14 who were previously abandoned, with a majority of them being boys.

“The categories of babies we receive include those from mentally ill mothers, abandoned infants, and those born in emergencies, among others,” explained Sr. Frances. “We have babies from across Northern Uganda and beyond, even from areas like Hoima and Nakasongola. We are here to protect the lives of these vulnerable children.”

Ngeta Babies Home, founded by the Catholic Church, provides care for children of all religions and respects their cultural backgrounds.

“Many of the babies brought here are in poor health, with some even abandoned in toilets,” said Sr. Frances. “Those who are abandoned are often adopted by good Samaritans and well-wishers.”

Sr. Frances further explained that the home currently cares for nine children with the assistance of three sisters. She emphasized the increasing number of infants being abandoned by their parents from various locations.

“Our donors are from within the community, including residents of Lira and other parts of Northern Uganda,” Sr. Frances said, expressing gratitude to Ateeq and the Pakistani community for their generous contributions.

She also acknowledged the support of local radio stations in Lira City and extended special thanks to UTC Lira for renovating the Ngeta Babies Home without any financial compensation.

A significant challenge facing the home is the lack of adequate water storage. Currently, they require six water tanks to meet their needs.

Atik Mohamed Nawesi, representing the Pakistani community, handed over the food items to the children.
