Metropolitan International University Student Killed in Kisoro-Kyanika Road Accident

A tragic accident along the Kisoro-Kyanika road has claimed the life of Irankunda Gad, a first-year student at Metropolitan International University.

The deceased, Irankunda Gad, with registration number 24/DAR/080/UKS, was pursuing a Diploma in Agriculture and Rural Innovations in his second semester. He was 25 years old and a resident of Muganza Village, Nyakabingo Parish, Chahi Subcounty, Kisoro District.




According to Kisoro District Traffic Officer in charge, OC Michael Kushaba, the accident occurred on 14th January 2024, at around 8:00 PM, in Busaru Village, Muganza Parish, Chahi Subcounty.




Kushaba stated that the accident involved two motorcycles: a Bajaj Boxer with registration number UDA 928C traveling from Kyanika to Kisoro, and another Bajaj Boxer, registration number UFA 876C, traveling from Kisoro to Kyanika.




As the latter attempted to overtake another vehicle while descending a hill and navigating a sharp corner in Busaru Village, it collided with the incoming motorcycle, causing serious injuries to the riders.

Both victims were rushed to Mutolere Hospital, where Irankunda was pronounced dead upon arrival. Post-mortem results indicated that the deceased suffered severe head injuries.

Kushaba attributed the accident to reckless overtaking and urged road users to always wear helmets, reduce speed, and exercise caution when overtaking.




In a related statement, Kisoro District Police Commander (DPC) Ben Niwamanya emphasized the importance of drivers and riders obtaining proper driving permits to help curb the rising number of road accidents in Kisoro District and across Uganda. He also called on motorists to respect road signs and regulations.

Niwamanya said: “Motorists must adhere to ethical driving guidelines to ensure safer roads.”

The Vice Guild President of Metropolitan International University, Faith Aturiheihi, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased, praising Irankunda for his commendable social and leadership skills.
