Oyam, Uganda – The Oyam District Veteran Soldiers Association today finally launched their SACCO. The association was formed in 2023 with 347 active members who are now engaged in economic activities such as agriculture (piggery, poultry, and seed raising) after their service.
However, due to financial challenges, the association was unable to launch their SACCO until now. The newly launched SACCO received a significant boost with a cash contribution of 1,500,000 Ugandan Shillings from well-wishers.
Charles Olila, the chairperson of the Oyam District Veteran Soldiers SACCO, stated that the absence of a SACCO had previously prevented them from benefiting from various government programs. Now, with the SACCO launched, they are hopeful that they will begin to access these programs to further strengthen their financial standing.
Shilako James, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Oyam District, urged the veteran members to continue working hard for their families and their country, Uganda, and to always exemplify good citizenship within their communities.
He assured them that he would convey their request for support for their SACCO to the Ministry of Veteran Affairs.
Among the pledged support are initiatives to support orphans and widows whose parents were soldiers, providing funds to boost the SACCO, and providing a tractor to the association to enhance their agricultural activities.
