(Arua City) – Eight criminal gang leaders in Arua City and surrounding areas have voluntarily turned themselves in to the police after authorities initiated discussions urging them to abandon illegal activities. The initiative, led by the police in collaboration with community leaders and local government officials, aims to reduce crime and encourage rehabilitation.
The police identified the gang leaders as Ali Tororo, Chicka also known as Ali Baba, Lojugo, Oscar Boniface, Angina Roy known as Rambo, and others. These individuals have expressed willingness to cooperate with law enforcement and contribute to efforts aimed at fighting crime in Arua City and the West Nile Region.
Asea Collins, the police public relations officer for West Nile Region, credited the success of the initiative to community policing and collaboration with the office of the Arua Resident City Commissioner. He emphasized that engaging local communities was a crucial step in achieving long term crime reduction.
According to Asea, the police began discussions with community members, local council leaders, and gang members two months ago. He highlighted the case of Ali Tororo, leader of a group known as Gaza, which operated near Airfield and in the Smash area. After engaging with police, Tororo disclosed details about several criminal groups he had established in Arua City that were involved in robbery and other illegal activities. Another gang leader, Chicka, also came forward with his group, which was active in Jiako and Krab areas.
Authorities have warned the gang leaders against returning to criminal activities, stating that they will continue to be monitored. The police will work closely with the public to ensure that former gang members do not engage in unlawful behavior. If they resume criminal activities, law enforcement will take immediate action against them.
Asea urged the community to give the former criminals a second chance while remaining vigilant. He reassured the public that the past records of the individuals remain open, and if they violate the law again, their files will be reactivated, leading to their arrest and prosecution.
The police are appealing to residents of the West Nile Region to stay calm and support the reintegration of these individuals into the community. They have also emphasized that any breaches of the law will be met with strict enforcement measures.
