(Kampala) - Besigye Faces Court Martial Over Security and Firearms Charges

Based on multiple statements from Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, it appears that the fate of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kiiza Besigye is uncertain. Specifically, his statements suggest a predetermined negative outcome for Besigye.

On his X page, where he is known for making controversial remarks despite his high-ranking position, Muhoozi commented that he had heard that Besigye is on a hunger strike.

He urged the former presidential candidate to expedite this process and die, claiming Uganda would be better off without him.

The First Son labeled Besigye a traitor, stating that he played no significant role in the 1986 NRA bush war. Despite being a medical professional recognized for treating many rebel casualties during that conflict, including President Museveni, the General contended that Besigye did not save anyone.

The former SFC commander further asserted that Besigye’s only ambition from day one was to eliminate the Museveni family. However, he warned that Besigye will now be held accountable for his actions.

“I hear KB is on hunger strike. Can he speed up the hunger strike so that he ends it? Uganda will be much better off without his stain.”

“KB is a traitor, who never saved anybody in the bush. Nobody! All he has done was plot to kill my family since day one! He is going to pay for it.”

This is not the first occasion where Muhoozi has implied that Besigye will be killed. Previously, he claimed that Besigye would be executed on Heroes Day.

His comments have caused considerable concern among Ugandans, as Muhoozi often makes statements that can resonate with street culture, though some have proven to be more than just talk.

Political analyst and former ISO spy Charles Rwomushana is among those who believe that Dr. Besigye’s fate is no longer in his own hands or anyone else’s, but rather solely in Muhoozi’s control, who has made it clear that Besigye must be removed.

Nevertheless, he advised the CDF to temper his rage and suggested that Besigye should be allowed to die elsewhere instead of in Luzira Prison, as that might lead to unrest in the country.

“Pretty late to save Dr. Besigye’s life. I would rather, for the sake of stability, urge Mr. Kainerugaba to relax his anger a bit, for it’s costly to the country. Release Dr. Besigye to go die from some good hospital. Coffin of Besigye from Luzira prison is catastrophic. Kindly reconsider,” said Rwomushana.

It’s important to note that Besigye was apprehended last December in Kenya and subsequently extradited to Uganda. He has faced treason charges, and since then, he, along with his legal team, the public, and the international community, has been advocating for his release.

There was a glimmer of hope for his freedom a few weeks ago when the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice Catherine Bamugemerire, annulled the General Court Martial’s jurisdiction over civilian trials, ordering the release and transfer of all civilian cases from the GCM. However, this decision was later overturned by the UPDF.

  • Once KB dies in Luzira prison as UPDF General is wishing , the General will either learned late nor will lived to remember that when the oppressed, poor & helpless population decides to take a risk of the unpredictable future. Decides to die once , to better be in hell or heaven than these lives on earth in Uganda. There have been Series of Regimes like NRA/NRM that history has told us all need.
