Godfrey Nsubuga’s impressive win in the Kericho Tea Fields trophy last weekend has positioned him as a top contender for the upcoming 2023 Uganda Open. The Mehta Golf Club golfer’s exceptional performance has garnered attention and established him as a favorite to secure the prestigious amateur golf championship.
In the Kericho tournament, Nsubuga outperformed a formidable field of competitors, including renowned Kenyan amateurs like John Lejirma and Ebil Omollo. Nsubuga achieved a total score of three-over 219, securing the winner’s trophy and a cash prize of Kshs 74,000 (Shs1.88m). His consistent rounds of 73, 70, and 75 were enough to edge out Lejirma, who carded scores of 73, 73, and 75.
Nsubuga’s recent victory in Kericho has set a promising tone for the 2023 Uganda Open, scheduled to commence with the Ladies Open at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) course in Kitante next weekend.
Additionally, during the launch of the Open on October 2, Emmanuel Wamala, the UGC captain, announced that they have meticulously prepared the golf course for all participants. The club is offering three complimentary rounds of practice for all golfers participating in the Open.
Martha Babirye is the reigning ladies’ champion, while Andrew Sekibega and Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi currently hold the titles for the amateur and professional categories, respectively.
