Tensions are rising in Nyundo Parish, Nyundo Sub-county, Kisoro district, as residents protest against a self-styled bush lawyer, Mukundufite Evarist Sebisaho, whom they accuse of rampant land grabbing. Residents are threatening to resort to mob justice as an alternative means of resolving the matter.
The latest outcry comes after Sebisaho allegedly seized five plots of land belonging to his sister-in-law, Feredianah Tumusiime, an elderly widow from Buzaniro Village, who is raising eight orphaned children following the death of her husband, the late Kalaveri Bataringaya, in 2022.
Residents accuse Sebisaho of targeting both private and public lands across Nyundo Sub-county, warning that the growing frustration may lead to violence, with some threatening to resort to mob justice.
The family of the late Bataringaya has also voiced their frustration, stating that Sebisaho had lived nearby and witnessed them using the land for over 40 years. However, they claim that after Bataringaya’s death, he began to claim ownership of the properties.
Sambura Lawrence, the LC1 Chairperson of Buzaniro Village, condemned the ongoing cases of land grabbing in the area. He also accused unnamed political figures of supporting Sebisaho’s actions for their own personal interests.
In his defense, Sebisaho dismissed the accusations as false, claiming that he possesses valid land agreements for the disputed parcels.
Meanwhile, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyundo Sub-county, Fred Kanyaruju Mutambuzi, urged Sebisaho to seek a peaceful resolution to the land disputes, emphasizing that dialogue and mutual respect are key to maintaining harmony within the community.
