Wakiso, Uganda — Peter Onzima’s 83rd-minute goal earned Mbarara City a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wakiso Giants on Tuesday at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Grounds, easing their relegation fears with just three Uganda Premier League matches left.
The crucial win lifts Mbarara City to 26 points—six clear of the drop zone—and within touching distance of safety. Wakiso Giants, meanwhile, remain on 20 points, facing increasing danger with only three fixtures remaining.
Heading into the encounter, both teams were desperate for a result, separated by just three points in the lower half of the table. Wakiso Giants started strongly and were awarded a penalty in the third minute, but Marvin Oshaba’s effort was saved by Mbarara goalkeeper Aaron Icumar, setting the tone for a tense and physical contest.
Wakiso’s hopes took a major hit midway through the first half when defender Mtita received a straight red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity by fouling Henry Kitegenyi. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Wakiso continued to press forward, with Hudson Mbalire causing problems for Mbarara’s defence. However, Icumar remained solid between the posts, producing a series of key saves to keep his side in the game.
As the match wore on, Mbarara City began to take control. In the final 20 minutes, the pressure mounted through persistent attacks from Henry Kitegenyi, Seiri Arigumaho, and Paul Busolo. Their efforts were finally rewarded when Kitegenyi whipped in a dangerous cross that Onzima clinically converted, sealing a vital three points.
The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the Mbarara City players and traveling fans. In contrast, frustration boiled over among Wakiso Giants supporters, many of whom directed their anger toward head coach Steven Bengo.
In other league action, Bright Stars were officially relegated following a 1-0 defeat to UPDF in Bombo. They join bottom-placed Mbale Heroes in next season’s FUFA Big League.
The Uganda Premier League comprises 16 teams, with the bottom three automatically relegated at the end of the season. With Mbale Heroes (16th) and Bright Stars (15th) already down, 14th-placed Wakiso Giants must now fight to avoid becoming the third team to drop.
