The Woman Member of Parliament for Obongi District, Hon. Zumura Maneno, has expressed concern over the rampant corruption in the district and has vowed to crack down on all corrupt officials.
Hon. Maneno was speaking recently to residents of Palorinya Sub-county in Obongi District, where over one billion shillings allocated for fish ponds, solar projects, and tree planting was allegedly embezzled by district officials.
She cited an example involving a district officer and one of his relatives, who are accused of embezzling about 500 million shillings—representing 5% of the 50 billion shillings allocated to Obongi District under the DRDIP program for one of the departments.
She further revealed that at Indilinga Health Centre II, over 40 million shillings meant for an orchard and kitchen gardening was also embezzled by some officials. In Palorinya Sub-county, additional funds meant for fish ponds and environmental projects were reportedly misappropriated.
The Woman MP pledged to take action against those involved, stating that significant funds intended for development programs and projects have been misused by certain district leaders, many of whom are currently under investigation.
Hon. Maneno also vowed to continue fighting corruption and pledged her support to the RDC’s office in its efforts to combat the vice.
“I have a lot of information about corruption in Obongi, which I am going to expose and ensure action is taken,” she said.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, thanked Hon. Zumura Maneno for her efforts in fighting corruption in Obongi, which he said is already leading to improved service delivery.
Hon. Maneno is known as a vibrant and effective MP, with a no-nonsense stance on corruption and substandard work in Obongi District.
RDC Hashaka added that he believes the people of Obongi will take action in the 2026 elections by voting out non-performing leaders and those suspected of corruption.
Efforts to reach the District Chairman of Obongi, Mr. Abinu Chemis Buga, for his side of the story were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to repeated phone calls by the time of publishing this article.
