Former Ugandan comedian Sammy Okanya, popularly known as Sammy Da Mighty Family, has taken to social media in a desperate appeal for help, accusing the National Unity Platform (NUP) of abandoning him in Kenya after he fled Uganda due to his political affiliations.
In a heartbreaking online video that has since gone viral, a visibly frail and emotional Sammy narrated his ordeal, claiming he is “starving, sick, and on the verge of death” after months of struggling in exile. The once-popular entertainer, now barely recognizable, says he is battling not just financial hardship but also deteriorating health, with no assistance from those he believed would support him.
Sammy alleges that his involvement in opposition protests and activism put him in danger, prompting him to flee Uganda on the advice of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, famously known as Bobi Wine. According to Sammy, he was promised protection and a path to Canadian asylum, but those assurances have not materialized.
“I was told to leave the country for my safety. I trusted the promise that I would be helped to get asylum in Canada,” Sammy lamented in his video. “But now I am alone, suffering, and have been forgotten.”
The comedian rose to fame for his humorous skits and satirical political commentary but faded from the limelight in recent years. His claim of abandonment has sparked mixed reactions online, with some questioning the truth of his narrative and others urging opposition leaders to account for those who put their lives on the line in the struggle.
As of now, the National Unity Platform has not issued an official response to Sammy’s claims.
