The Office of the President in Lira City, led by Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Emmy Lawrence Egole, has issued a comprehensive update on the ongoing construction of the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium, describing the project as a visible sign of progress and a fulfillment of the NRM government’s commitment to the Lango sub-region.
On July 13, 2025, RCC Egole, along with Assistant Resident City Commissioners Bonny Ferdinand Okello Alele, Bonny Otucu, and Deputy RCC Stephen Odongo, conducted an official inspection of the construction site.
The team expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the work, noting that the stadium is steadily taking shape and quickly moving toward completion.
Contrary to earlier claims by political critics who dismissed the stadium as an empty promise, the site is now a hive of 24-hour activity, with skilled workers, heavy machinery, and a determined technical team pushing the project forward.
The RCC described the stadium as a game-changer for the region—not just in terms of sports development, but also in employment, tourism, and infrastructure.
Named after Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist and Lango hero, John Akii-Bua, the facility will be a modern, multi-purpose stadium capable of hosting national and regional events. It is expected to provide opportunities for youth in sports, stimulate local economic activity, and serve as a platform for cultural and public events.
The Office of the President emphasized that the project is a direct result of President Yoweri Museveni’s vision and the NRM’s commitment to inclusive development. With visible progress now underway, the narrative pushed by opposition figures has lost credibility.
The significance of the stadium extends beyond infrastructure, it stands as a political and symbolic victory for the NRM in northern Uganda. It joins a series of ongoing developments in Lira City, including improved road networks and USMID-supported infrastructure upgrades, all credited to consistent government investment in the region.
Local leaders, including Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero (Woman MP, Lira City), Hon. Denis Hamson Obua (Government Chief Whip), and Hon. Dr. Opio Acuti (MP, Kole North), continue to play key roles in advocating for and delivering development to Lango. Their alignment with the central government has been instrumental in bringing such large-scale projects to life.
Looking ahead to the 2026 general elections, officials from the Office of the President expressed confidence that the people of Lango will recognize and appreciate these achievements by continuing to support the NRM. The progress of Akii Bua Stadium is viewed not only as fulfillment of a promise but as a lasting symbol of trust and partnership between the government and the people.
The RCC reaffirmed the Office’s full commitment to overseeing the project to completion, stating, “Together, we build. Together, we progress.”
