A total of 22 people lost their lives across the country during the 61st Independence Day celebrations, which took place in Kitgum District on Monday. The police have provided details of these incidents.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga addressed the media and disclosed that a total of 31 criminal cases were documented on that day. Among these cases were three instances of murder, five cases of mob-related murder, two cases of murder resulting from assault, two cases of suspected suicide by hanging, one case of murder through poisoning, three cases of murder by strangulation, and three cases of murder by cutting.

Enanga stated, “As a result of the reported cases, 22 individuals lost their lives, and nine suspects have been detained in police stations as the investigations continue.”

In one particular case in Busika Central, Luweero District, unidentified thieves broke into the home of Mr. Moses Matovu, a taxi driver, who managed to repel the intruders. However, he was stabbed by one of the thieves, who later met their end at the hands of irate neighbors. The thief’s body was set on fire after being beaten. Detectives visited the scene, and the victim’s body was taken to Luweero Hospital for a postmortem. The local LC1 chairperson has also provided a statement to the police, and inquiries into the matter are ongoing.

Another incident occurred in Luweero, in Kikoma Zone, Wobulenzi, where a man identified only as Masembe was beaten to death by a mob for allegedly attempting to steal waragi distillery tubes. An unidentified person saw Masembe in the act and raised an alarm, attracting the attention of the public. Masembe was pursued and beaten by the crowd, later succumbing to his injuries at Luweero Hospital.

Kampala Metropolitan North recorded the highest number of cases, followed by Rwenzori West and the Savana region.
