Arrested

BUSHENYI, Uganda — Police in Bushenyi District have arrested a 51-year-old man on allegations of murdering his younger brother following a series of reported assaults.

The suspect, identified as David Mugumya, a resident of Rwamabare Village in Bumbaire Parish, Bumbaire Sub-county, is accused of assaulting his brother, Patrick Tibayungwa, 42, whose injuries reportedly led to his death.

According to police, Tibayungwa died on June 7 while being rushed to hospital for treatment after allegedly sustaining serious injuries from repeated assaults.

The incident was first reported to police on June 5 as an assault case. However, following the victim’s death, investigators upgraded the file to a murder case.

Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson SP Apollo Tayebwa confirmed the arrest and said preliminary investigations point to a history of violence between the brothers.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had allegedly been subjected to repeated assaults by his brother. The matter had earlier been reported to police as an assault case, but following the victim’s death, the case was upgraded to murder, and investigations are ongoing,” Tayebwa said.

Police officers visited and processed the crime scene before transferring the deceased’s body to Kitagata Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Mugumya is currently being held in police custody and is assisting detectives with investigations into the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death.

The tragic incident has shocked residents of Rwamabare Village, with local leaders calling for peaceful resolution of family disputes to prevent similar occurrences.

Police have condemned the alleged act and urged the public to seek lawful avenues for resolving conflicts.

“We strongly condemn all forms of violence and urge members of the public to resolve disputes through lawful means and seek timely intervention from relevant authorities,” Tayebwa added.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
