WAKISO, Uganda — Police in Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) have arrested three suspects believed to be members of a criminal gang known as “Bona Bafu” during a coordinated operation carried out in the areas of Agenda, Mbalwa, and Namugongo in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
According to KMP spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the operation took place on May 26, 2026, at around 7:00pm, leading to the arrest of the trio suspected of being involved in a series of criminal activities targeting residents in the area.
The suspects are alleged to have participated in burglary, theft, phone snatching, and violent attacks on members of the public, including incidents where victims were assaulted using paving stones. Police also suspect the group of engaging in the consumption and distribution of narcotic substances.
During the operation, officers reportedly recovered exhibits including suspected marijuana leaves and several bundles of rolled substances believed to be opium.
“The group is alleged to have been involved in criminal activities, including burglary, theft, phone snatching, assaulting members of the public using paving stones, and the consumption of narcotic substances. During the operation, police recovered exhibits including suspected marijuana leaves and bundles of rolled suspected opium,” Kawala said.
She confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody, where they are facing charges related to possession of suspected narcotic substances, pending further investigation and prosecution.
“We reaffirm our commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of residents within KMP,” she added.
The arrests come at a time when police continue to intensify operations against organized criminal gangs in urban areas. In the 2025 Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report released in April, Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba noted that 196,405 cases were reported in 2025, a decline from 218,715 cases in 2024.
Of the reported cases, 115,301 were forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, while 79,291 were taken to court as authorities continue efforts to improve prosecution and accountability in the justice system.
