MOROTO – Police in Moroto District, Karamoja Sub-region, in collaboration with local leaders, have destroyed 160 jerricans of illicit crude waragi as part of ongoing efforts to curb the production and consumption of illegal alcohol in the region.
The destruction exercise was carried out on Thursday following a court order authorising the disposal of the impounded illicit alcohol.
Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, Michael Longole, said the operation was conducted in line with Presidential Executive Order No. 3 of 2021, which prohibits the manufacture, sale, and consumption of illicit alcohol.
He noted that the exercise is part of routine enforcement measures aimed at eliminating harmful alcoholic products from communities in Karamoja.
Moroto Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Ahmed Washaki, who witnessed the disposal exercise, said such operations are conducted every three months under court supervision.
He stressed that illicit waragi has continued to claim lives and destroy families across the Karamoja Sub-region.
“This exercise is carried out every three months by court order,” Washaki said, adding that security agencies are committed to protecting communities from the dangers associated with illicit alcohol.
Washaki also commended security forces for their continued vigilance in impounding and destroying illegal alcoholic products.
Longole reaffirmed the Uganda Police Force’s commitment to working with sister security agencies and local leaders to eliminate illicit waragi from the region.
“Police is mandated to protect public health and maintain law and order across the Karamoja Sub-region,” he said.
Authorities say the crackdown on illicit alcohol will continue as part of broader efforts to safeguard public health and reduce alcohol-related deaths and social problems in the region.
