Dfcu bank emerged as the overall winner of the 2023 bankers’ sports gala, a sports event organized by the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services in collaboration with the Uganda Bankers Association. The gala took place at the MTN Arena in Lugogo, featuring various sports activities.
The 23rd edition of this sports gala witnessed participation from more than 15,000 individuals from the banking sector, engaging in sports such as athletics, football, basketball, golf, volleyball, and indoor games that culminated on Sunday.
In the overall rankings, Dfcu bank secured the first position, with Diamond Trust Bank and Finance Trust Bank achieving second and third places, respectively.
The quiz competition saw Dfcu bank, FINCA, and GT bank taking the top three positions. In the men’s 100m race, Centenary bank, Dfcu, and NCBA bank clinched the first, second, and third spots, while in the women’s category, Centenary bank, Bank of Africa, and DTB emerged as victors.
The relay races in the men’s category were won by Centenary bank, Dfcu, and NCBA bank, while in the women’s category, Centenary bank, DTB, and Housing Finance Bank claimed victory. In football, the top three positions were secured by Post bank, DTB, and Centenary bank.
I & M bank, DTB, and Centenary bank were triumphant in the basketball competition. The tug of war competition saw DTB, Finance Trust Bank, and Stanbic bank emerge as winners.
Goretti Masadde, the CEO of the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services, expressed satisfaction with the success of the sports gala. She highlighted the increased competition, physical activity, networking opportunities, and mutual support among participating banks.
Masadde noted improvements in this year’s event compared to previous years. Banks were seen to evaluate their needs for recruiting young talent and providing continuous training for their staff. There were also proposals to extend the games over a period of three months.
She emphasized the positive impact of the gala in fostering unity among bankers from different financial institutions across the country, particularly acknowledging the increased participation of women in various sports, ensuring inclusiveness.
