In a recent statement, the African Union (AU) has emphasized the need for a quick return to constitutional order in Gabon and Niger following the military coups in these two African nations. The AU’s Peace and Security Council reiterated its strong stance against any unconstitutional change of government and urged both countries to establish a clear and time-bound transition period towards civilian rule.

Specifically addressing the situation in Niger, the council demanded the immediate and unconditional release of President Mohamed Bazoum and all other detainees. The council called for the protection of their human rights, including the safeguarding of their physical well-being and moral integrity.

In Niger, the military detained President Bazoum on July 26 and installed Abdourahamane Tchiani, the former leader of the country’s presidential guard, as the head of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland. This governing body, established by the military, has assumed legislative and executive authority since the coup.

In a similar vein, after a coup in Gabon on August 30, Brice Oligui Nguema, commander-in-chief of the Gabonese Republican Guard, was named the transitional leader of the country.

In response to these military coups, the AU Commission took action by suspending both Niger and Gabon from the pan-African bloc. This suspension will remain in place until normal constitutional order is restored in both nations.

The AU also urged all political, civil, and military actors in Gabon and Niger to prioritize peaceful political solutions as they work to restore constitutional order.
