A Kisumu County employee, Wilson Ojuang Aminda, has been sentenced to a one-year jail term or a Ksh10,000 fine for his involvement in disrupting a political rally held by President William Ruto in 2021. The disruption occurred during a campaign rally that took place in Kisumu several months prior to the 2022 elections.

Aminda, along with accomplices, was accused of throwing stones during the rally, which led to disturbances and disrupted the peace at the event. Specifically, he was charged with destroying five government vehicles at the Kondele roundabout, including a special Land Cruiser REG GKB 263G, GKB 741J, and a Toyota Hilux, all of which were part of the Deputy President’s motorcade at the time.

The Kisumu Court’s ruling found Aminda guilty of two counts: destroying government property and acting in a manner that disrupted peace. He had initially pleaded not guilty to these charges in November 2021 and was released on a cash bail of Ksh100,000, with an alternative bond of Ksh500,000.

Aminda’s arrest followed the circulation of video footage and photos on social media that featured his involvement in the disruption. The Police Spokesperson at the time, Bruno Shioso, revealed that the arrest was made after thorough investigations and due to tensions in the Kondele area related to the alleged distribution of campaign logistical funds among local groups.

The disruption took place during a political rally featuring President William Ruto, who later assumed office as the fifth President of Kenya on September 13, 2022.
