Bobi Wine Announces 2026 Presidential Bid

In the political landscape leading up to the 2026 elections, Kyagulanyi’s decision to run again underscores the persistent dynamics between the ruling party and the opposition. As Museveni aims to maintain his long-standing position, Kyagulanyi’s candidacy signals a continued challenge to the status quo, setting the stage for a potentially competitive electoral campaign.

The leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, has officially declared his intention to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the upcoming 2026 elections. In an interview with CNN, Kyagulanyi expressed his commitment to challenging Museveni through “every moral and constitutional way” and asserted that they would participate in a free and fair election in 2026.

Kyagulanyi, a 41-year-old singer-turned-politician, emphasized the importance of seeking international attention to support the democratic rights of the people of Uganda. The announcement comes amidst the anticipation of the general elections scheduled for January 12 to February 9, 2026. Candidates for presidential, parliamentary, and local government positions will be nominated from June to October 2025.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s electoral commission, revealed in November 2023 that President Museveni would be the party’s candidate for the 2026 polls. Odoi claimed that Museveni already secured 4.8 million votes, emphasizing the NRM’s determination to retain power. He pointed to the significant number of party leaders as a sign of potential support for the NRM candidate.

During the last general elections, Museveni emerged victorious against Kyagulanyi, his main rival, securing a sixth elected term in office. Museveni garnered six million votes (58.38%), while Kyagulanyi received 3.6 million votes (35%). Despite this defeat, analysts highlight Kyagulanyi’s substantial following, international exposure gained through an award-winning documentary, and potential collaboration with four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye as indicative of his influence within the opposition.
