Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, as it graduated its first group of lawyers. The inaugural cohort, consisting of 26 law students, marks a noteworthy achievement for the Catholic-based institution as it commemorates 30 years of existence and its 29th graduation ceremony. During an exclusive interview with New Vision, UMU's Vice Chancellor, Patrick Kyamanywa, expressed his enthusiasm for this historic occasion, stating, "We are having our first-ever cohort of lawyers graduating today, October 18, 2023, as the institution marks 30 years. This first cohort consists of 26 law students that will graduate." Furthermore, this special occasion saw the official commissioning of the faculty of law building at UMU, which will serve as a valuable resource for law students. Professor Patrick Kyamanywa emphasized the significance of this development, saying, "The establishment of the law school faculty is a remarkable achievement amid the current legal challenges in the country. The law school program didn't have a home, so commissioning of this faculty on this day is very significant for us because it will mark the birth of the faculty of law at Uganda Martyrs." Professor Frederick Juuko, the dean of the Faculty of Law at UMU, received commendation for his role in nurturing this fine group of lawyers. In total, 1,693 students graduated from Uganda Martyrs University, representing nine faculties, seven campuses, and two schools. Vice Chancellor Kyamanywa congratulated the graduates for their resilience in overcoming various challenges, including the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He also announced that the institution will soon be graduating engineers, as the engineering faculty recently received accreditation from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). Uganda Martyrs University celebrated its 30th anniversary on October 18, 2023, since its establishment in 1993. What initially began with two faculties and 80 students, namely the faculty of business management and the faculty of accounting, has since expanded to offer over 155 programs, educating over 4,000 students and fostering a community of 30,000 alumni. Uganda Martyrs University, a private institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda, operates eight branches across the country, with its main campus located in Nkozi.
