Ssemujju Stings NUP- Warns Against Electing “Comedians” to Parliament

Veteran legislator Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has raised concerns over the quality of some of Uganda’s elected lawmakers, sending what many interpret as a subtle critique of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Speaking recently on a local talk show, Ssemujju said, “There are comedians in Parliament, who are very good at comedy. People vote them, and their job is just to further Museveni’s agenda to stay in power.”

He explained that voters often make choices based on popularity rather than capability. “I’ve been to many places across the country, and people applaud me saying they wish there were 20 like me in Parliament. People can criticise me, but consciously they know there is work in Parliament,” he added.

Ssemujju cautioned against handing the country to unqualified leaders. “If a particular group of elite have disappointed you, you don’t hand over the country to wheelbarrow pushers,” he said, emphasizing the need for experienced and competent lawmakers.

A few days ago, he had pointed out that some of the NUP legislators are inexperienced. “If it were up to me, the late Ssegirinya wouldn’t have gotten a card to be in Parliament,” he said, highlighting concerns about the competence of certain elected officials.

While Ugandans have long criticized the inefficiency of political elites, Ssemujju’s comments suggest a warning: voters should prioritize experience and capability over popularity when choosing their leaders.

Meanwhile the vocal MP will be clashing off with NUP’s flag bearer, George Musisi for the Kira Municipality parliamentary seat
