ADB-Funded Project Restores Over 1,300 Hectares of Forest in Eastern Uganda

Sebei and Bugisu See Environmental Recovery Through ADB Support

Kapchorwa, Uganda — The local communities of the Sebei and Bugisu sub-regions have commended the African Development Bank-funded project (SACRiAC) for its tremendous work in helping to restore the degraded environment in the two regions.

The SACRiAC project is being implemented in four districts, Bukedea, Sironko, Kapchorwa, and Bulambuli, within the Awoja catchment downstream of the sub-catchments of Komirya, Sironko, Simu-Sisi, Muyembe, and Sipi.

The project, which focuses on strengthening the adaptive capacity and resilience of communities in Uganda’s watersheds, has so far afforested a total of 1,396.6 hectares of forest land, achieving 56% of its overall target of 2,500 hectares.

The project has also agroforested 7,096 hectares across the four districts.

Apart from restoring the environment, the Ministry of Water and Environment, which is the key implementing ministry of the project, is constructing three water supply systems and four valley tanks to boost water security.

Speaking to this publication, Mr. Peter Batiya, one of the residents of Bulambuli, hailed the project and urged that it be rolled out across the entire country.

“I wish this project could cover the entire country because today we are facing climate challenges due to a lack of community sensitisation on environmental protection,” he said.
