Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the Second Lady, has introduced a detention center within a wellness and rehabilitation center in Rumuruti, Laikipia County. This facility is intended to serve as a correctional center for minors who have been arrested for minor offenses.
During the groundbreaking ceremony held at Kandutura Ground in Laikipia on Wednesday, Pastor Dorcas expressed her commitment to collaborating with the Judiciary and the County governments to ensure the timely completion of the project.
According to the Second Lady, this facility will play a crucial role in correcting the behavior of delinquent children, helping them reform and become productive members of society.
“We are doing something innovative that involves cooperation between the national government, county governments, and the judiciary. We aim to establish a detention center within the Wellness and Rehabilitation Center for students who have been arrested for minor offenses and are currently in prisons. Our goal is to provide them with rehabilitation opportunities. By the time they complete their stay, they will be ready to contribute positively to society,” she explained.
In addition to its role as a detention center, the Wellness and Rehabilitation Center will encompass a range of services, including a health facility, a rehabilitation center, a digital hub, a sports academy, vocational training, and a prayer center.
Pastor Dorcas emphasized that the detained individuals would also receive training in agribusiness and entrepreneurship to empower them to support themselves after their release. The facility will offer free therapeutic services for individuals with cerebral palsy and autism.
“This facility will house one of the largest occupational therapy programs for individuals with cerebral palsy. Those suffering from autism will also receive free treatment here,” she announced.
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu welcomed this initiative, highlighting that it would equip local youth with vocational skills and create job opportunities for the community.
Pastor Dorcas Rigathi has been actively involved in rehabilitating youths struggling with drug and substance abuse. In recent months, she has overseen the rehabilitation of over 200 young individuals in treatment centers located in Timau, Meru County, Nairobi’s ASK Showgrounds, Limuru in Kiambu County, Donholm, and Bomet Counties.
