(Unguja) – Zanzibar Diversifies Tourism Offerings to Attract More Visitors

Tourism remains Zanzibar’s most important sector, contributing over 30% to the region’s GDP and foreign exchange earnings. Additionally, the sector provides employment for more than 200,000 people, accounting for over 60% of jobs in the tourism value chain.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, the number of tourists visiting Zanzibar increased by 16.4% in 2023, rising from 548,503 in 2022 to 638,498 in 2023. The government aims to further boost these numbers, targeting 800,000 tourists annually through improved marketing and promotion of its attractions.

Traditionally, Zanzibar’s tourism has centered on beaches and historical sites. However, recent government initiatives aim to diversify the sector to include conference tourism, sports tourism, and cultural tourism. This strategy seeks to attract a wider range of visitors and encourage repeat tourism.

In August 2024, 68,223 tourists arrived in Zanzibar, a noticeable increase from 58,711 in July. By September, arrivals had grown further to 72,296, followed by 67,049 in November. These increases reflect government efforts to promote Zanzibar as a multifaceted tourism destination.

Tourism Minister Ramadhan Soraga emphasized the need to diversify offerings, stating that a reliance on limited attractions discourages repeat visits. New tourism categories, such as Halal tourism and green tourism, are being introduced to capture emerging markets and provide sustainable options.

Zanzibar now boasts over 600 tourist-grade hotels with 20,000 rooms. It also benefits from increased air connectivity, with over 80 airlines flying directly to the island. These enhancements make the region more accessible to international tourists and business travelers.

In 2024, Zanzibar hosted its first Halal tourism conference, attracting participants from 12 countries, including notable figures like Mufti Ismail Menk. Halal tourism, focused on respecting cultural and ethical values, is a growing market. Soraga stated that Halal tourism alone could significantly increase Zanzibar’s global appeal, with the market projected to grow from $245.78 billion in 2022 to $324.96 billion by 2030.

Sports tourism is another key focus. International events like marathons and cultural festivals have been organized to promote the island as a unique travel destination. These events not only draw visitors but also stimulate local economic activities in sectors such as hospitality and transportation.

Tourism Commissioner Rahim Bhaloo urged local communities to seize opportunities within the expanding tourism sector, emphasizing the importance of aligning with emerging trends. Executive Secretary Arafat Abbas Manji highlighted green tourism as a cornerstone of Zanzibar’s strategy, with initiatives to support local entrepreneurs and showcase cultural heritage.

Efforts are also underway to integrate historical, culinary, and conference tourism into Zanzibar’s offerings. Government and private sector collaboration aims to extend visitors’ stay and increase their engagement with the island’s diverse attractions.

Director of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mohammed Juma reiterated that the strategic focus on diversified tourism offerings will strengthen Zanzibar’s position as a world-class destination. Collaborations with public and private stakeholders are central to achieving sustainable and inclusive tourism growth.
