The Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among is reportedly facing growing political pressure as investigations and allegations linked to corruption continue to dominate Uganda’s political discourse.
President Yoweri Museveni said to have reconsidered her re-election bid as Speaker of the 12th Parliament following consultations with ministers and members of his family.
The discussions are alleged to have led to support shifting toward MP Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth as a possible replacement.
Sources further claim that Among’s international sanctions over alleged misuse of public funds, particularly in connection with the Karamoja iron sheets scandal, played a key role in the reported political realignment.
However, Among has consistently denied any wrongdoing. She has previously argued that the sanctions imposed against her were politically motivated, linking them to her strong support for the Anti-Homosexuality Act. She has also urged Ugandans to remain patient and allow investigations to establish the truth.
In political circles, the situation has sparked renewed debate over accountability and influence within Parliament, with some MPs reportedly still aligned to Among due to past political ties and favors accumulated during her tenure.
The unfolding developments underscore ongoing tensions around corruption allegations in Uganda’s leadership, even as the political future of key figures remains uncertain.
