The Bugisu sub-region is preparing to host the 2026 International Tourism Day celebrations scheduled for September 27, following a proposal by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities.
The spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Hon. Steven Masiga, welcomed the development, describing it as a major opportunity to boost tourism and economic activity in the region.
Masiga made the remarks during a two-day stakeholders’ training workshop organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, held at Resort Hotel in Mbale City.
He noted that the International Tourism Day celebrations typically involve a series of activities conducted over a month. These include tourism exhibitions, familiarization trips, youth and school engagement programs, and the Explore Uganda Tourism Excellence Awards, all leading up to the main event on September 27.
Masiga emphasized that hosting the celebrations in Bugisu would significantly promote the region’s tourism potential and attract both local and international visitors.
He called upon hotel owners to prepare adequately and take advantage of the anticipated influx of visitors. He also urged schools across the Bugisu region to actively participate in supporting the event.
During the same workshop, Masiga revealed that several high-level dignitaries are expected to attend the upcoming Imbalu circumcision ceremony launch on August 1. He disclosed that over ten kings from countries such as Nigeria and Cameroon, along with their business delegations, are expected to attend.
He further stated that President Yoweri Museveni and the President of Kenya are also expected at the Imbalu launch, and appealed to hotel owners and stakeholders to provide the necessary financial and logistical support.
Masiga expressed optimism that the events will drive significant revenue into the Bugisu region.
The workshop was organized and facilitated by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, with coordination support from officials including Madam Harriet from the Ministry and Mbale Tourism Officer Madam Winnie.
