Bunagana Town Council authorities, together with Ugandan security officials, yesterday cracked down on 47 juveniles who were skipping school to join the Bunagana weekly market. Among those apprehended were 16 Ugandans and 31 Congolese.
Bunagana Town Council Mayor, Ismail Ndayambajye, revealed the surprising details behind the operation, prompted by complaints from school headteachers in Bunagana Town Council. These headteachers expressed concern over the increasing number of school dropouts in the area. The Bunagana market operates weekly every Tuesday.
Mayor Ismail used the opportunity to advise parents on how to address the escalating issue of school dropouts and the dangers of raising children outside of school. He emphasized that the future will be increasingly challenging for those who are uneducated.
Ismail urged Congolese parents to ensure that their children attend school despite the hardships in their area. He also called on parents to commit themselves to addressing the problem by proposing suitable punishments for their children who skip school.
The apprehended children vowed not to return to the market during school hours, pleading for mercy and promising to focus on their education.
