RDC Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka Commissions UGX 380 Million Poultry and Goat Project in Itula Sub-county, Obongi

OBONGI, Uganda — The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Obongi District, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, has commissioned a modern poultry and goat-keeping project worth over UGX 380 million in Itula Sub-county.

The project, funded by the Government of South Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), is aimed at benefiting both refugees from South Sudan and host communities in Obongi District.

The initiative, implemented in Morobi Parish, was officially launched by RDC Hashaka, who was accompanied by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC), Umuhoza Habiba Furaha.

Speaking at the commissioning, Hashaka thanked the Government of South Korea for strengthening bilateral relations with Uganda, as promoted by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

The Country Director of ChildFund Uganda, Mr. Tumusiime Titus, revealed that under the first phase of the poultry project, 630 layers and cocks have already been procured and are currently producing about 450 eggs daily for hatching into day-old chicks.

He added that the project is expected to produce 1,056 day-old chicks every 21 days using two modern incubators, each with a capacity of 538 eggs.

Tumusiime further disclosed that under the goat-keeping component, 48 female goats and 8 male goats have been acquired to boost livestock production in the area.

The Project Manager at ChildFund Uganda, Mr. Nabasa Francis, said research conducted in the district showed that eggs and chicken sold in Obongi are sourced from over 400 kilometers away, making them expensive and less accessible to local residents.

RDC Hashaka commended ChildFund and KOICA for selecting Obongi, a largely rural district, for the project, noting that many development partners often prioritize urban areas.

He explained that the integrated livelihood, education, and protection project will improve nutrition among children while equipping communities with modern poultry and goat-keeping skills.

Hashaka urged beneficiaries to safeguard the project, emphasizing that it is meant to benefit the wider community.

The Head of Office at UNHCR Moyo, Mr. Jelvas Musau, also commended the Government of South Korea for its continued support to Obongi District and other refugee-hosting areas.
