Meet Okello Alele, a 65-year-old beekeeper making millions in Lira District

Lira, Uganda – Okello James Alele, 65, is a beekeeper from the Northern Ugandan district of Lira. He is the owner of Akilo Apiculture Farm, and has been in the business for over 40 years.

Alele started out with just seven log hives in 1979. Today, he has over 112 hives, and produces about 2-3 million shillings (US$6,000-9,000) worth of honey per harvest. In a year, he harvests three to four times, bringing in a total of 15 million shillings (US$45,000).

Alele’s honey is in high demand throughout the Lango sub-region, and he supplies it to schools, supermarkets, hotels, and hospitals. He also sells it online.

In addition to honey, Alele also produces other bee products, such as propolis, beeswax, and royal jelly. He processes all of his products himself, and labels them with his own brand.

Alele is a strong advocate for beekeeping, and encourages other farmers to take up the practice. He believes that beekeeping is a profitable and sustainable way to make a living, and that it also helps to pollinate crops.

Alele is also a mentor to young beekeepers. He has trained many people in the art of beekeeping, and he is always willing to share his knowledge and experience.
