A security incident unfolded at Nakasero State Lodge on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, resulting in the arrest of Shafik Bwanika for allegedly attempting to access the premises without necessary security clearance.
Maj. Jimmy Dennis Omara, spokesperson for the Special Forces Command (SFC), announced in a statement on May 2 that investigations had been initiated to determine the motive behind the attempted breach.
Omara recounted the events, stating that at approximately 2:10 pm on the aforementioned day, a vehicle bearing registration number UBE 434T, driven by Bwanika, attempted to forcefully enter Nakasero State Lodge. SFC soldiers on guard duty intervened, thwarting the breach as the vehicle disregarded all security protocols and signals.
Efforts to halt the speeding vehicle included firing warning shots, followed by targeting the car’s tires to slow it down. Despite these measures, Bwanika attempted to flee, driving with damaged tires until reaching Platinum Hospital gate, where he parked the vehicle. Subsequently, the police arrested him, and he is currently detained at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala. Bwanika was accompanied by a female companion at the time of the incident.
SFC emphasized the importance of adhering to security protocols and instructions when accessing restricted areas like Nakasero State Lodge. They urged the public to heed the guidelines and information provided at checkpoints to ensure safety and security.
Special Forces Command (SFC) is a specialized unit within the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) responsible for executing specialized missions or operations at short notice. These missions include safeguarding the President, members of his family, designated government officials, and critical installations across the country. SFC operates closely with the land forces and air forces of the UPDF.
Nakasero State Lodge serves as one of the official residences of the President of Uganda. In addition to Nakasero, there is another State House located in Entebbe. Furthermore, several state lodges are situated across the country, each serving specific governmental functions.
