A supporter of the Uganda Premier League team Kitara FC lost their life in a car crash on the Hoima-Masindi Road in Hoima district. The incident occurred as the fans were returning from witnessing Kitara, also known as The Royals, secure a remarkable 3-1 comeback victory against Bright Stars in Masindi.
The crash, involving a vehicle with registration UBG 458N, resulted in the immediate death of one individual, identified as 18-year-old Timothy Kyomuhendo, a resident of Busiisi division in Hoima municipality. Seven others sustained serious injuries when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road at a spot in Kakindo village, Bulindi town council, around 8 pm.
The injured were promptly rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, with five fans showing signs of improvement while two remained in critical condition. Amos Kusetula, an intern doctor at the hospital’s surgery department, provided these details, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Police spokesperson Allan Hakiza confirmed the crash, indicating that a comprehensive report would follow after an investigation by fellow officers who visited the scene. The exact circumstances leading to the crash were not immediately available.
Wyclif Mugume Munyizi, the chairperson of Kitara FC fans, attributed the accident to speeding and appealed for responsible driving practices among fans, emphasizing the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
While Kitara celebrated their ascent to the second position on the Premier League table, the joy was overshadowed by the tragic incident. The team now sits three points behind leaders BUL. The comeback victory against Bright Stars, with goals from Paul Mucureezi and Jude Ssemugabi, marked a significant achievement for Kitara, but the jubilation was marred by the untimely loss of a devoted fan.
As the football community mourns the loss of one of its own, leaders BUL have the opportunity to extend their lead by six points if they win against Mbarara City, while reigning champions Vipers aim to surpass Kitara when they face Jinja SSS on Sunday.
