Man Drowns after Losing 6 Million Shillings to Betting
A tragic incident has left a family in Kayabwe Town Council, Mpigi District, mourning the loss of their loved one, who reportedly drowned in River Katonga after losing 6 million Shillings in sports betting. Richard Muwonge, a local businessman, went missing on Friday, and his disappearance was attributed to the significant sum he had lost at a sports betting facility in Kayabwe.
Local authorities were informed of the incident by Mr. Abdul Muwami, the Kayabwe village chairperson. He stated that Muwonge had been involved in a bitter quarrel with his family members on the fateful Friday before vanishing. His lifeless body was later discovered in River Katonga.
According to Mr. Muwami, “We received the shocking news from his family members on Friday evening that Muwonge had drowned in River Katonga. We also got unconfirmed news that the deceased had lost money at one of the sports betting facilities around.”
A family member, Mr. Joseph Kamoga, confirmed that Muwonge’s dispute with his family escalated after he lost a substantial amount of money at a local betting facility. Kamoga recounted that Muwonge left home on a motorcycle (boda boda), and they were unaware of his whereabouts. The shocking news of his drowning arrived at around 7:00 pm on that tragic Friday.
A close friend of the deceased, Mr. Abdul Rahman Kamani, revealed that Muwonge had approached him, seeking 1.5 Million Shillings from their joint online business account to help cover his losses. Kamani agreed, and they conducted the transaction at a mobile money agent. To Kamani’s shock, later that same day, Muwonge’s life was tragically cut short as he drowned in the river.
Muwonge’s body was recovered from the waters of River Katonga on a Sunday morning by local fishermen.
