Lira City, Uganda – Police in Lira City East Division are investigating a harrowing case of aggravated defilement after a five-year-old girl was reportedly lured from her home and sexually assaulted in a nearby bush.

According to SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred on the evening of July 28, 2025. Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect, identified as Odyek Brian, aged 22 and a resident of Agwentangwet “B” Cell, Ngetta Ward, allegedly targeted the minor, who is enrolled in top class at a local nursery school.

Police say the child was dragged from her home and into a secluded area, where the assault is believed to have taken place. The suspect was arrested shortly after and is currently in custody at Lira City East Division Police Headquarters.

The young victim has since received a medical examination and is undergoing Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and psychosocial support.

“We strongly condemn this horrific act against a vulnerable child and reaffirm our commitment to pursuing justice without fear or favor,” SP Okema stated.
“We continue to work with child protection agencies, local leaders, and stakeholders to ensure the victim’s recovery and the swift prosecution of the suspect.”

The police are preparing the case file for submission to the Resident Chief State Attorney (RCSA) for legal guidance.

Police urge parents, guardians, and the general public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious movement or conduct involving minors.

They emphasize the collective responsibility everyone shares in protecting children from harm. The local community’s timely information that aided in the swift arrest of the suspect is highly appreciated, and the public will be updated as the investigation progresses.
