MBARARA, Uganda – Police in Mbarara City, working jointly with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), intercepted 10 buses over the weekend carrying 823 youths who were allegedly being transported under the controversial AIM Global scheme, which authorities say operates fraudulently.
The buses were stopped at around 1 a.m. on Saturday at the Biharwe checkpoint before being impounded and escorted to the Mbarara Police playground, where all passengers underwent a thorough screening exercise.
According to sources, the youths had been mobilised from several districts across the western region and were being transported to Kampala. After profiling and documentation, security teams have since begun returning the youths to their respective homes.
Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, SP Samson Kasasira, said many of the victims reported paying between Shs1.2 million and Shs1.5 million to agents of Alliance in Motion Global after being promised job opportunities in Mbarara and Kampala.
Kasasira noted that the youths were heading to an annual AIM Global meeting at Freedom City in Kampala when authorities intercepted them.
“The victims were on their way to Kampala City for an annual Alliance in Motion Global meeting that was being held at Freedom City building on Saturday,” he said.
Police cautioned the victims and advised them to return home as investigations into the alleged scam continue.
SP Kasasira urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious recruitment or mobilisation activities to security authorities.
