Police in Katwe-Kabatoro Division, Kasese District, are investigating a fatal road accident that occurred on the night of January 15, 2025, along Hamukungu Road within Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The incident, which happened at approximately 11:40 PM, involved a motorcycle with registration number UGA 359 D.
Preliminary reports indicate that the motorcycle, ridden by 19-year-old Asaba, collided with a hippopotamus while traveling at high speed. Tragically, Asaba succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. His passenger, identified as Timothy Tumusime, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Traffic Police from Katwe-Kabatoro Division promptly responded to the incident and transported the deceased to Kasese Health Centre III for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities attribute the accident to excessive speed and have urged motorists and drivers to strictly adhere to Uganda Wildlife Authority’s speed limit guidelines within the park. They warned that non-compliance will result in arrests and prosecutions.
SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, emphasized the importance of caution, stating, “Drivers and motorcyclists must respect speed limits within the park to avoid such tragic incidents. We remain committed to ensuring safety on these roads.”
Police have stated that efforts are ongoing to raise awareness and enforce regulations to protect both human and wildlife safety within Queen Elizabeth National Park.
