EDUCATION FIRESTORM: Kagadi Targets Unlicensed Schools, Ten Directors Arrested

KAGADI, Uganda –– Ten directors and head teachers of primary schools have been arrested and detained at Kagadi Central Police Station for allegedly operating unlicensed educational institutions in Kagadi District.

The operation, conducted on Tuesday, was led by Kagadi Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Jeremy Namanya in collaboration with officials from the District Education Department as authorities intensified efforts to enforce education standards in the district.

The crackdown comes shortly after a similar exercise carried out last week in Buyaga West Constituency, where more than ten school directors were arrested and several unlicensed schools were shut down.

Among the schools closed during Tuesday’s operation are Christ the King Nursery and Primary School, Bravo Primary School, St. Ambrose Primary School, Ebenezer Quality School, St. Peter and Paul Primary School, and Alpha Nursery and Primary School.

Speaking after the operation, Namanya said the enforcement exercise will continue until all illegal schools in the district are closed, warning that no institution will be allowed to operate outside government regulations.

“Last week we closed several schools and today we have closed ten schools. This exercise will continue and is intended to enforce government standards and improve the quality of education,” Namanya said.

He warned that operating unlicensed schools exposes proprietors to arrest and prosecution, stressing that such institutions undermine education standards in Kagadi District and the country at large.

Meanwhile, the Inspector of Schools for Greater Kiryanga, also serving as Kagadi District Sports Officer, John Mugume, confirmed that the deadline for school registration had already passed, making continued operation of unlicensed schools illegal.

“The deadline for school registration has already passed, making the operation of unlicensed schools illegal. The exercise will continue until all unlicensed schools are uprooted from the district,” Mugume said.

He urged parents to verify the registration status of schools before enrolling their children, warning that offenders will face prosecution.

Following the operation, pupils from the affected schools were sent home, with parents advised to transfer them to nearby government-aided institutions as authorities continue the enforcement drive.
