Charles Peter Mayiga, the premier (Katikkiro) of Buganda Kingdom, has issued a stern warning to the Baganda community against individuals seeking to sow seeds of division among them for their own personal gain.
On Tuesday, May 14, Mayiga delivered this cautionary message while receiving voluntary donations totaling 35 million Ugandan shillings under the initiative known as Oluwalo Lwaffe (our duty) from subjects of the Kabaka residing in Kyadondo, Buddu, and Bulemeezi counties, according to a statement released by the Buganda Kingdom.
The statement, conveyed in Luganda, acknowledged the historical divisions that arose within the Buganda community during the 20th Century as a result of wars and conflicts. Despite these challenges, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II pursued a visionary policy of unification during his reign. However, Mayiga lamented that certain individuals continue to pursue divisive agendas for their own selfish interests.
In April of the previous year, during his 68th birthday celebrations at his main palace in Bulange, Mengo, the Kabaka emphasized the importance of unity among his subjects. He underscored that unity serves as the bedrock of victory and encouraged his people to maintain this spirit. Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of unity in combating issues such as HIV/AIDS, stressing the importance of promoting safety, testing, and seeking medical care.
Expressing gratitude towards his people for their love, obedience, and unity, the Kabaka urged them to remain steadfast and focused. He emphasized the need to persevere without wavering, demonstrating a commitment to collective well-being and progress.
Mayiga’s warning against divisionism echoes the Kabaka’s call for unity, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and cooperation within the Buganda community.
